Naked - a Social Fascination

I'm not opposed to nudity. In a way I grew up with it, and I don't mean my own. Just the nature of going to a beach in Sweden. The readers in Europe probably feel differently about the topic. Maybe not? But I remember walking through Paris and being taken aback by the kinds of advertising I would see on public billboards such as the bus stop.

What is it about nudity that sells? Sex sells, but it's not really "sex" so much as sexy. The allusion to sex. Celebrities sometimes launch their careers through Playboy; some celebrities use it to stake their claim on their celebrity. And society seems to be at least interested in if not somewhat obsessed with all things "Playboy."

I'm on this topic because I was surprised to find that Hugh Hefner was the number three search today according to Yahoo. After doing some Googling (sorry Yahoo...you're cool for some things, but I still go to Google to search) I found that the impact of the magazine on society reaches further than body image and sexuality. Ever heard of Fahrenheit 451? Guess where it was printed first...

I have more to say on the topic, but with PrettyThin Magazine I am trying to say less and less on PrettyThin itself. At the end of the day, this site is a community of support. But for those who are looking for a topic of debate, there you go.

Hey, I'm editing today (March, 2011)

I'm online right now. I'm going to be online all day, and on PrettyThin - editing mainly. Catching up on the things I keep neglecting. So, if you've submitted images for the Members Photos area or if you've sent me your blog link to be included in the Members Blogs area, then I will be getting to it today.

If you feel like you want to grab my attention and tell me something I forgot, or to share a great idea with me,  just click that green Contact button on the left.

Anyway, I'm here doing things. Hope you're day is bright and sunny as you do things too...

Oh!, And thanks for the letters :-) I'm going to be reading them too...as well as running to the post office to send out 30 more bracelets...

Stay Beautiful, just as you are,

Back to Normal - wait...what's normal?

Thank you, all those who voted for me and supported me in this race for $100,000. If you don't know what I'm talking about, check out the previous post. One day left! Please vote.

PrettyThin has more than 9,000 visits a day. That could be a lot of votes :-)

Someone asked me for pictures of Emma Watson. I don't ask questions. No, we're not related.

What I found interesting last week was the boot camp that Kate Middleton was going through over the past couple weeks. I assume she'll be going through them until the wedding, trying to make herself beautiful. Not too beautiful, certainly; just as there is someone hired to make sure she stays in shape, there is someone there to make sure she doesn't get too in shape - doesn't push it too far, as it were.

But hey, what do I know. I realized this morning that the only reason I have that crease where my hip meets my belly is because I'm getting a belly - so here I go with the protein shakes and the creatine monohydrate - and they say this isn't disordered eating...it's "getting back in shape."

But who am I to judge. The richest and most powerful people in the world....wait a minute; I don't actually think they're that rich. I mean, J.K. Rowling has more money than they do.  And as for power, I mean, doesn't the parliament and prime minister decide everything? So...they're there to....hmmm....tell us what a dream looks like? They live in castles! Great people as they may be, I apologize for using this as an example of anything. But how can a pro-ana site let something like this pass without comment.

It's news...just like how it was news that Princess Diane struggled with bulimia.

It's over. I'm over it anyway. But maybe that's the problem...

How did a pro-ana site become PrettyThin....?

It's members, like you, that make PrettyThin the community of support that it is.
Thank you for being you.

One Member's Letter - would you like to submit a letter?

Hello there, I'm not sure what your name is but I understand that you are an adult man (which I find quite intriguing).... anywho, hi. My name is C, I am a member of your site for over a year now. I met one of my best friends here. After wandering around, reading your "hate mail" I just thought I would add something to counteract what they are saying. I don't typically contact site owners or people in general (I'm pretty much a loner) so this is new to me.

A little about me:
I am 22 years old, I turn 23 next month and I am a single mother to an 18 month old. I have had a variety of eating disorder since I was a VERY young child. I have gone from a diagnosis of Anorexia, to Bulimia, to now, ED-NOS. I have been put down, told that I was only doing this for attention; however for years and years I didn't tell anyone and hid it as much as possible. When I was 13 and up I was very suicidal and even attempted suicide. When I was 14 I discovered my first pro- ana website and for the first time, I felt like I belonged in some kind of group, a clique if you will. I read all these posts and emails from people who don't see the bigger picture. I don't believe that pro ana sites teach young girls to be anorexic. It is true that some silly young girls come on these sites after being taught in school how BAD ana sites are... but that is almost always a phase. They never actually go into full blown anorexia or any type of eating disorder. I just think that maybe you can somehow get this across to the hate mailers that this website keeps alot of people from going to the extreme. We're going to do what ever we're going to do regardless of what we see or read. I do hope you are able to keep this website running because it keeps me sane when I'm not at school. Ironically, I'm going to school to become a nurse lol... I find it funny anyway.

Also, I just had a question about you and you don't have to answer if you don't want to: do you have an eating disorder? I don't know many men who have eating disorders so I was just wondering.

ANSWER: No, I do not have an ED, but then again, who really has ordered eating...off to have a protein shake and then the gym. Yeah, that's normal :-p

But we also get hate letters. Here is one example....

Shameless - but I could really use your help

PT - Ever feel like this?

The things I do have always been an expression of who I am. Or at least who I want to be. I believe that you can only be the person you wish to be by being the person you want to become.  Often people want you to be something else, and generally they want it because they feel like the way they are or the way they think is best for everyone else - at least they think it's best for you.

But no matter what you do or what you say to another person, they will always be driven to become who they want to be. There may be obstacles; there may be apprehensions, fears, and mistakes; but in the end, all of us - me, you, them - will crave being where our minds and emotions lead us.

Voices. Whispers. Desires.

There are cravings within every one of us toward something. We each have a fluttering voice which in our minds reflects the cold touch of raindrops of naked skin. That companion within that will embrace us the way the sun on a cool spring day caresses our skin. That spirit in each of us that wishes to burst forth and scream "this is me!"

But what is that....?
Who defines that for you...?
Who asks you to be something else....?
How strong are you to stand in the face of it all and say "no, I want to be me."

We make mistakes in our lives. We crash....we bleed....we cry. But on who's terms?

I choose to take on the world on my terms and have it bend to my will. I will be like the bamboo tree that sways in thunderous winds - I will not break like the great oak that's rigid and will not bend. But I will be me, because I have this one life, and I live it for me...

March 5, 2011

New Members Photos have been uploaded. Keep them coming even though I'm behind on posting them. A few people have commented that I should give credit for where the images come from, but I have decided against it for a couple reasons. The first is simply that there is no way to verify where a lot of the images come from. That's why I alter the color, edit and crop, and add the PrettyThin logo to them, to overcome copyright issues. The second issue is to prevent stalkers from finding the profiles of individuals they might be creeping on.

Update on PT Unity Bracelets, Second Edition: I am going to take them offline on Monday so I can catch up on shipping. I expect to post them back up later in the week.

I may reserve the last five for a giveaway, and give everyone an opportunity to try to get one. April 2 will be the announcement on what that giveaway might be...but stay posted. I'm known to be random and change my mind :-)  If I do, it will only be on dates...

March 2011

PrettyThin Unity Bracelets - Second Edition
ON SALE NOW

(Day 1 - 22 sold - going to the post office now to send them - March 3)

The PrettyThin Facebook page has been deleted. I have contested the decision and hope that it may be back up again soon. But I really have no idea. They view it as a pro-ana page and not as an ED support page. It seems like we still have a long way to go.

Stay Beautiful, just as you are....
